What does people-pleasing have to do with cancer you may wonder?Let's talk about it.People-pleasing is well past being kind, caring or generous. It’s a deeper pattern of consistently putting the needs, emotions, and wellbeing of others ahead of yourself. Often at the expense of one’s own physical, emotional, and mental health.I have seen this pattern in so many, if not, all of my clients who are dealing with cancer. I saw it in myself too.Many people who identify as people-pleasers have spent a lifetime being “the strong one.” The dependable one. The caregiver. The peacekeeper. The person everyone else could lean on.These behaviors in adulthood are learned in childhood. As children we are dependent on our primary caregivers for our basic needs to be met. At a primal level, children are fully dependent on their caregivers for their basic needs.&nbsp;Another way of saying this is that, as a child, you need your parents. There is no other option but to count on the adults in your life. Aside from meeting our basic needs of food, we also need our parents to acknowledge us and love us. These concepts allow us to grow into emotionally and mentally sound adults.Here's the issue. For most of us, there were gaps in the ways that we were loved. These gaps of love, safety and security came in a variety of ways. This is not about blaming or shaming&nbsp; your parents. The reality is that they did the best they could with what they knew or were taught. These “teachings” have been passed down from generation to generation.&nbsp; The ways we raise children are programs that run deep based on belief systems that are unconsciously weaved into the very fabric of our society. Often the "way things are" go so far back that no one really understands or knows where it originated from. Here are a few examples that may sound familiar from our childhoods: the expectations to get good grades, take care of our siblings, work a job at a young age, clean up our room, not cry even if we wanted to, be obedient, be helpful, and share our toys even if we didn't feel like it. These are just some of the ways that may have contributed to our&nbsp; people-pleasing patterns as adults.As adults, people-pleasing shows up as:<ul><li>difficulty saying no</li><li>poor boundaries</li><li>chronic stress</li><li>emotional suppression</li><li>over-responsibility</li><li>exhaustion</li><li>resentment</li><li>hypervigilance</li><li>self-neglect&nbsp;</li></ul>And while these patterns may appear functional from the outside, internally it creates a prolonged state of stress and emotional tension.Prolonged and repeated stress and emotional tension can eventually lead to chronic poor health. Cancer is one example, but definitely not the only disease that can occur in the body due to these patterns.&nbsp;Often how we know we are people-pleasing is noticing a contraction that happens inside. It can be a subtle pinch of a "no" that we are overriding. Our mind says "say yes", but at the same time we are feeling a visceral "no".Over time, I refer to the pinch or contraction as tension or stagnation in the body. This tension is important because when there is tension, there is a lack of flow. Our bodies need to flow in order to exist as harmoniously as possible.Ask yourself: How many times did you ignore your own needs? Silence your emotions? Push through exhaustion? Say yes when your body wanted to say no? Take care of everyone else while quietly abandoning yourself?The first step is simply becoming aware of these patterns — and this is part of the work I support clients with cancer through. Noticing the patterns of people-pleasing can help all of us-not just those with cancer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

People-pleasing, Emotional Suppression & Cancer

I believe that the topic of terrain is foundational to the work I do with people facing a cancer diagnosis. My hope is that by exploring this idea more deeply, it can bring some clarity to the difficult and emotional question many people ask:Why do some people develop cancer while others do not?Why do some people eat highly processed foods for decades and live into their nineties, while others appear to “do everything right” — eat clean, exercise, and live consciously — yet still become seriously ill earlier in life?I want to introduce the concept of terrain to help explain help answer these questions from a different perspective.To understand terrain, we have to step outside of the conventional model of disease and into another way of viewing the human body and health. The term terrain comes from the work of French scientists Antoine Béchamp and Claude Bernard. In French, the word terrain translates to “soil.”When applied to human health, terrain refers to the internal environment of the body — the totality of factors that influence a person’s state of health and vitality. This includes not only physical health, but also emotional experiences, stress levels, environmental exposures, nutrition, relationships, beliefs, trauma, lifestyle habits, genetics and even a person’s sense of purpose and connection.In other words, terrain is the whole person, and no two terrains are exactly alike. Even more importantly, terrain is constantly changing. Your terrain today is not exactly the same as it was yesterday, and it will continue to shift throughout your life depending on what nourishes or depletes you.This perspective changes the way we think about disease — especially cancer.Rather than asking, “What caused the cancer?” terrain asks a broader question:“What conditions within the body allowed cancer to develop and grow?”This is an important distinction.From a terrain perspective, cancer is not viewed as something random that appears out of nowhere. Instead, it is understood as a signal that the body’s internal environment has been under stress or imbalance for some time. That imbalance may come from chronic inflammation, toxic burden, emotional trauma, nutrient deficiencies, unresolved stress, poor sleep, environmental exposures, suppressed emotions, or a combination of many factors over time.This does not mean that someone is to blame for their illness. That is never the point of this conversation. The purpose of understanding terrain is not to create guilt or shame. Rather, it is to empower people to understand that the body is dynamic, adaptable, and always responding to its environment.When we begin supporting the terrain, we begin supporting the body’s ability to heal, regulate, repair, and restore balance.The reason I bring the concept of a person’s terrain into conversations about psycho-emotional health is because our thoughts and emotions have a profound influence on the body’s internal environment.When you really think about it, every person has experienced a vast range of emotions and thought patterns throughout their lifetime — stress, fear, joy, grief, anger, love, worry, hope, loss, and everything in between. These experiences do not exist separately from the body; they are deeply intertwined with our physical health and wellbeing.My hope is that by exploring this intimate relationship between the emotional and physical aspects of who we are, it becomes easier to understand how everything works together to shape and influence our terrain.When it comes to cancer, I fully believe there is never a one-size-fits-all approach. Every person’s experience is unique. At the same time, because every human being has an emotional and mental life, I believe these aspects are absolutely worth exploring as part of the healing journey.Not because emotions are the sole cause of illness, but because they are undeniably part of the whole picture of health.The terrain model reminds us that healing is not simply about fighting disease. It is about creating the conditions within the body where health can become possible again.And in my experience, including the psycho-emotional aspects of our terrain should be included. &nbsp;&nbsp;

What Is a Person’s Terrain and What Does It Have to Do with Cancer?

Your emotional experiences are deeply connected to your physical body. That’s because every aspect of you — physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual — informs the other. We tend to think of these things as separate components, but in fact they are all interconnected, all the time.In terms of emotions, when an emotion occurs and cannot be fully experienced in the moment, or soon after for whatever reason, it can become trapped in the physical body. This is what is referred to as emotional suppression. It is a concept that has been studied, written about, and explored for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.If you think about your own lifetime, consider all the situations — conscious and unconscious — in which you had to suppress an emotion. That could amount to a great deal of emotional suppression held within the body for many different reasons. Because if the emotion doesn’t simply vanish, it goes somewhere. And by default, it finds its way into the physical body.This can be understood as a point of tension, tightness, constriction, or contracture. Any of these words could describe the phenomenon. That tension may begin as a tight shoulder or a headache, but for some, over time, it can manifest into more serious conditions such as cancer or heart disease.Hopefully, you are beginning to see why emotions matter.The ideal situation is what many animals naturally do. Think about a dog that has a stressful encounter with another dog. What does the dog do afterward? It shakes itself. That is the ideal response. The dog intuitively shakes off the energy of the emotion.Emotion = energy in motion.As humans, we are often not as good at shaking things off as they arise. Instead, we suppress and hold onto things.How you feel and how you think shape your physical health every day — even when you are not aware of it. And just as powerfully, your physical health affects your thoughts and emotions. Each informs the other, always.That is why I believe, from both my own experience and my training, that a cancer journey is not only about addressing the physical, but also the emotional. The commitment to explore past and present emotional experiences can be difficult, especially when it comes to experiences from childhood.In my opinion, this kind of inner work is one of the highest acts of self-love, because it is about holding a loving, nurturing, and inquisitive lens toward who you are in this lifetime. It is also about allowing yourself the opportunity to deeply understand that many of the things you learned as a child have informed who you are as an adult. The Body Remembers: Why Emotions Matter

Did you know that thousands of years ago, philosophers in China were already exploring emotions and their relationship to the physical body? I find it fascinating that long before modern medicine and psychology began discussing the mind-body connection, ancient cultures were already recognizing that our emotional experiences and physical health are deeply interconnected.Emotions are at the heart of my work because, both personally and professionally, I have seen how integral they are to healing. I want to share what I know and understand about emotions because I think it’s an important topic related to cancer and other chronic diseases.Most of us think of emotions as something that happens only in the mind and heart. Something we feel temporarily and then move on from.But emotions are not just mind-heart experiences. They are physical experiences too.Every emotion we experience creates a response within the body.&nbsp;Think about your own experiences with different emotions. Fear can tighten the chest. Grief can feel heavy in the body. Anxiety can create tension, digestive changes, exhaustion, or difficulty sleeping. Joy can create lightness, openness, and energy.Since the beginning of your existence, your body has been constantly responding to your emotional world.The truth is that when emotions are fully felt, processed, expressed, and supported, they naturally move through us. Unfortunately, many of us were never taught how to safely process difficult emotions such as anger, grief, sadness, fear, rejection, shame, or loss. This is not anyone’s fault but typically just a inter-generational way of being in the world that was past onto us.&nbsp;As a child, you may have been told to stop crying when all you wanted to do is cry, but instead you forced yourself to stop. Over time suppressing emotions becomes the norm and what often happened is that we gradually became disconnected from what we felt in order to survive and keep going.&nbsp;Over our lifetime, our bodies often start to show the signs of this emotional suppression. This can look like many different chronic physical manifestations-diseases, inflammation, unexplained ongoing symptoms, and chronic pain. The body is showing what the mind-heart tried to bury within it. &nbsp;It’s important to emphasize that there is no blaming or shaming with whatever is showing up in your body. This work is about moving towards an understanding that chronic stress and unresolved emotional experiences affect all parts of us, including the physical body. It’s also important to understand that the mind-heart is intimately interconnected to the physical and vice-versa. &nbsp;This psycho-emotional work is critical for individuals dealing with cancer.Not with blame. Not with guilt. But with curiosity, compassion, and awareness.I encourage you to look at cancer as an invitation to get curious, and allow yourself the opportunity to question everything you have ever been through-especially the hard stuff. &nbsp;Could there be parts of your story asking to be explored more deeply? A painful childhood experience you have carried quietly for years. Grief that was never fully processed. Emotions you learned to suppress long ago just to survive. People-pleasing patterns that slowly disconnected you from yourself.Healing is never only physical because we are not only physical beings. We are emotional, mental, physical, and deeply human.

What Are Emotions — And How Do They Relate to Cancer?

Cancer changed me in ways I never expected.Like many people, when I was first diagnosed, my focus immediately went to the physical — the appointments, the information, the treatments, the decisions that suddenly needed to be made. Everything became about surviving and figuring out what to do next.But somewhere along the way, I had this old intuitive nudge, from years prior, that cancer was not just a physical journey.Underneath the physical, there was another journey unfolding — an emotional one.&nbsp;As soon as I could recover from the initial shock of the cancer, I immediately contacted the person I knew I could undeniably count on to guide me on the emotional journey. Her name was Lisa. Lisa was a holistic health and Reiki practitioner, but those titles barely captured who she truly was. She possessed a rare intuitive wisdom and spiritual depth that made people feel deeply seen and understood. I had met her years earlier, when she helped guide me through another difficult chapter of my life, so when cancer entered mine, I knew instinctively she was the person I needed. She became my guide in exploring and unraveling the psycho-emotional dimensions of the disease. &nbsp; With her guidance and unwavering support, I began peeling back the layers of my life story—revisiting childhood experiences, long-held emotional wounds, and patterns I had carried for decades. For the first time, I could clearly see the immense stress that had lived in my body for so much of my life, and how often I had silenced my own needs in order to keep going for everyone else. I also came to recognize the weight of emotions left unspoken and unprocessed—grief, fear, exhaustion, and pain buried beneath years of survival, especially through the challenges of the past few years. &nbsp; Without saying it out loud, the work I was doing with Lisa was confirming what I already knew intuitively about healing-that the body is not separate from our emotional experiences.Our lives live inside our bodies. Our childhood patterns. Our grief. Our stress. Our fears. Our losses. Our survival responses. Our unspoken emotions.For so long, I had believed being strong meant continuing no matter what. Pushing through exhaustion. Ignoring what I felt. Taking care of everyone else first. My role models did it this way and so I was meant to too.Cancer made me stop.And in that stopping, I began listening to myself in a way I never had before.I learned that healing is not about fighting the body, but supporting it- physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.I learned that emotions matter. That chronic stress matters. That the nervous system matters. That feeling safe matters.Most importantly, I learned that healing is deeply personal.There is no single path. No perfect formula. No right way to move through a cancer journey. But for me, part of healing involved looking beyond the physical diagnosis and exploring the deeper emotional landscape underneath it all.Today, this understanding has become the foundation of the work I now offer others.Cancer changed my life. But it also changed the way I understand healing.

What I Learned from My Own Journey With Cancer

One of the most important things I have learned through both my personal cancer journey and over 20 years in health and wellness is this:The body is always trying to heal.Every single moment, your body is working on your behalf. Repairing. Protecting. Adapting. Restoring balance. Even when you are exhausted. Even when you are afraid. Even when things feel uncertain.Healing is not something the body forgets how to do. It is built into who we are. Just because we don’t know that or we’ve forgotten, doesn’t mean it’s not happening all the time.&nbsp;When you cut your finger, you do not have to consciously tell your body what to do. You do not direct the cells, close the wound yourself, or remind the tissue to repair. The body immediately responds with its own innate intelligence — protecting, repairing, regenerating, and moving toward healing naturally.This is the mystery and the miracle of our bodies. Healing just happens.In many ways, the body approaches cancer through that same innate drive toward healing and protection.Perhaps one of the most important — and complex — questions we can ask is: What is cancer?Is cancer simply a disease to fight? A collection of abnormal cells? A genetic event? An immune system breakdown? Or could it also be understood as the body responding, adapting, or communicating within a much larger picture of physical, emotional, environmental, and life circumstances?Modern medicine only offers biological explanations for cancer, but what if we looked at a cancer diagnosis as an opportunity to ask deeper questions about our emotional history, chronic stress, unresolved experiences, and the stories the body is carrying over our lifetime.When cancer is looked at through a broader lens that includes the psycho-emotional landscape of who we are, the idea that our bodies are not working against us continues to make sense.The cancer and the physical symptoms can be looked at as the body’s attempt at getting your attention. Something is needing your prompt attention.At the same time, because the body is constantly moving towards healing, it is continuously adapting, communicating, and attempting to restore equilibrium in the best way it knows how. &nbsp;What becomes important is understanding what may be interfering with the body’s natural ability to heal optimally. The physical part is the first one to receive attention and care, but what about the emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of who we are? This is the psycho-emotional side of cancer that often gets missed.
